Flakka, which is the slang term for alpha-PVP or a-PVP, is a synthetic drug that is similar in structure to amphetamines. Though flakka has existed for decades, the drug did not receive widespread attention until early 2015 with a number of incidents involving people who had taken flakka and engaged in volatile and erratic behaviors. With effects that include hyperstimulation, paranoia, violent delusions, and intense delirium, flakka has earned a reputation for being a dangerous drug that puts users at risk for a variety of negative outcomes, including dependence. As evidence of its potential for devastation, flakka’s addictive properties have been compared to those of methamphetamine.

Though flakka abuse is a relatively recent phenomenon, the professionals at Sunrise Recovery Ranch in Riverside, California are prepared to provide the comprehensive flakka addiction rehabilitation and care that can empower individuals to end their dependence upon this drug. With decades of cumulative experience helping men and women escape the chains of addiction, our treatment teams possess the skills and dedication that are necessary not only to treat the symptoms of flakka use disorder, but also to identify and address the underlying issues and co-occurring disorders that may have led to or been impacted by the individual’s flakka abuse.

How to Help a Loved One

Helping a loved one get treatment for flakka addiction

If you discover that someone you care about has been abusing flakka, your initial response is likely to involve both concern and confusion; both of these emotions are justified. Flakka abuse can lead to profoundly problematic outcomes, but the relatively recent emergence of this drug means that reliable information about its effects can be difficult to find.

This does not mean that the situation is hopeless, though. Please consider the following:

  • Consult reputable sources to get the latest information about flakka. Dramatic headlines about volatile flakka-fueled behavior may draw readers, but the associated articles are often short on details about the drug.
  • Visit websites that are maintained by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA), and Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) to get accurate, current, and non-sensationalized information about flakka.
  • Talk to experts. Your family doctor, community-based mental health services agencies, and addiction support groups can all provide essential insights into the challenges that your loved one is facing.
  • Research the types of flakka addiction rehab and treatment that have helped others who were in similar situations. If you know that your loved one is also dealing with depression, posttraumatic stress disorder, or another co-occurring disorder, take these needs into account when researching treatment options.
  • Identify substance abuse treatment centers for flakka abuse that offer the type and level of care that seems to be most appropriate for your loved one. Contact the program by phone and, if possible, arrange for a tour of the center.
  • Talk to your loved one about your concerns, share the information you have gathered, and discuss what needs to occur for him or her to get into a flakka addiction treatment center. Be firm, but resist the urge to judge, criticize, or issue ultimatums. Never lose sight of the fact that your loved one is in pain, and that his or her words may be a manifestation of that pain.
  • If possible, accompany your loved one to the treatment center, and provide whatever other logistical or emotional support he or she needs. Do what you can to ease his or her mind and remove obstacles that are preventing him or her from getting treatment.

Why Consider Treatment

Why consider treatment for flakka addiction at Sunrise Recovery Ranch in Riverside, CA

Flakka is a powerful substance whose abuse has been associated with a variety of reckless, dangerous, and otherwise volatile behaviors. Similar in some ways to amphetamines, but with the potential to have a much more powerful impact on a person who abuses it, flakka can have a dramatic effect on a person’s ability to perceive reality, think clearly, and control his or her behaviors. Flakka abuse has led to several high-profile showdowns between users of the drug and law enforcement authorities who were attempting to limit the danger that these individuals posed to themselves and others. Continued abuse of flakka can cause physical and psychological damage, and can render a person virtually incapable of functioning as a healthy and productive member of society. Academic failure, job loss, chronic unemployment, arrest and incarceration, social isolation, financial ruin, and the potential for homelessness are among the very real risks faced by individuals whose flakka abuse is not resolved with effective rehabilitation at an addiction treatment center for flakka abuse

Individual therapy: Individual therapy is an essential component of treatment at Sunrise Recovery Ranch. Every person who heals with us has the opportunity to participate in at least two individual sessions each week. During these sessions, clients meet with their substance abuse counselor to discuss the progress they have made, process any successes or setbacks, and address any concerns that have arisen since their previous session. Coordinating closely with our certified addiction counselors, marriage and family therapist interns and trainees will also meet with each client on a weekly basis, with additional sessions available to be scheduled on a case-by-case basis.

Family therapy: If a client chooses to incorporate his or her family members into the treatment experience, marriage and family therapist interns or trainees are available to conduct family therapy sessions on a weekly basis. Depending upon the specific needs of the client and his or her family members, additional family sessions may be held via teleconference during the client’s individual therapy sessions.

Group therapy: Group therapy sessions provide valuable opportunities for clients to share their knowledge, learn from the experiences of others, and practice important skills under the guidance of a qualified professional such as a marriage and family therapist intern, marriage and family therapist trainee, chemical dependency counselor, or clinical technician. Several group sessions are held every day to address a variety of topics, including the following:

  • Anger management
  • Defense mechanisms
  • Relapse prevention
  • Spirituality
  • How the disease has impacted clients and their families in a negative manner
  • Nutrition and wellness

Depending upon the specific needs of the client, aftercare planning may include coordinating with community-based support services, locating sober living environments, or identifying the friends, family members, and other individuals who will comprise the client’s personal support network.
