Stimulants are a type of substance known to increase energy, enhance alertness, and promote attention. They are also known for their ability to suppress appetite, which makes them extremely appealing to individuals who desire to lose weight. Medically, amphetamine stimulants like Adderall or Ritalin are prescribed to treat attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) because they improve functioning by enhancing mental acuity, helping individuals with ADHD to sustain attention and focus on the tasks at hand. However, the positive effects that are produced when these substances are used for nonmedical purposes can be highly addictive and can rapidly introduce one to the vicious cycle of addiction that may require rehabilitation at a professional stimulant addiction treatment center to overcome.
The category of illicit stimulants also includes methamphetamine (meth) and cocaine, both of which can produce pleasurable sensations, including an enhanced sense of self-confidence and euphoria. This substance, like prescription amphetamines, is highly addictive and can rapidly wreak havoc on an individual’s life. Regardless of the type of stimulant that is being abused, the ramifications that can arise from doing so can be far-reaching and long-lasting. Detriments can appear in all aspects of a user’s life, which is why it is imperative that comprehensive care at a stimulant abuse treatment center is sought promptly in order to put an end to this potentially deadly addiction.
At Sunrise Recovery Ranch in Riverside, California, we recognize the immense battle that attempting to overcome an addiction to stimulants can pose for our clients. For this reason, we have devised specialized rehabilitation and programming for stimulant abuse that is tailored to help individuals overcome their compulsion to abuse this substance, while also learning the tools necessary to successfully manage future cravings and prevent relapse. At Sunrise Recovery Ranch, a new beginning can be discovered.
How to Help a Loved One
Helping a loved one get treatment for stimulant addiction
If you have discovered that a friend or family member has developed an addiction to stimulants, you are likely experiencing an array of emotions. You may feel angry at your loved one for putting his or her health at risk, you may feel frustrated at your loved one for his or her inability to simply stop using the drug, and you may feel extremely worried about what the future holds for your loved one if he or she does not stop engaging in this behavior. While it can be intimidating to confront your loved one, it is important to remember that your intervention could mean saving your loved one’s life. Consider the following tips for helping your loved one during this time:
- Become educated on the different types of stimulants, including what their effects on the mind and body are and ways to recognize if an overdose has occurred.
- Research treatment centers that specialize in providing a stimulant abuse rehab program for individuals who are specifically struggling with an addiction to stimulants.
- Learn about ways that you can support your loved one during this time by visiting different online support groups or talking to a mental health professional about stimulant addiction treatment center options.
- Talk to your loved one about the concerns you have. If you feel it would be appropriate and not too overwhelming for your loved one, include other people in your life into the conversation so that your loved one can see that his or her behaviors are affecting many people.
- Show your loved one the research you did on various treatment center options for an addiction to stimulants. Offer to contact different treatment centers to inquire about their admissions and assessment processes. If appointments are scheduled, offer to accompany your loved one.
- Once treatment has begun, make every effort to be involved in the therapeutic process. Attend family therapy sessions if they are offered and remain in contact with your loved one, checking in frequently to see how he or she is doing. This simple act can demonstrate to your loved one that he or she is not alone and that he or she has your ongoing support.
Why Consider Treatment
Why consider treatment for stimulant addiction at Sunrise Recovery Ranch in Riverside, CA
If an individual is suffering from stimulant use disorder and does not receive appropriate therapeutic interventions, he or she is at risk for experiencing a number of negative effects. Physically, these individuals may suffer from respiratory distress, malnutrition, oral health problems, sinusitis, skin infections, seizures, chest pains, irregular heartbeat, and irreversible cognitive impairment. Additionally, one’s relationships may become disturbed as seeking, obtaining, and using stimulants becomes his or her top priority. Social withdrawal and isolation are frequent occurrences, as is the onset of marital and familial strife. Furthermore, there are some instances in which individuals may become so entrapped in their addiction that they become involved in things like theft, prostitution, or dealing drugs in order to obtain drugs or to obtain the money they need to buy drugs. In other words, an addiction to stimulants can cause monumental levels of devastation in an individual’s life. Yet, by engaging in appropriate rehab at a high-quality stimulant addiction treatment center, this type of devastation can be successfully avoided.

At Sunrise Recovery Ranch, we offer a designated men’s program and a women’s program where gender-specific groups are held and programming is altered based on the various issues that men and women face. During various activities, however, men and women will engage in programming together while at our treatment center for an addiction to stimulants.
When engaging in a residential rehab program at a treatment center for a stimulant addiction at Sunrise Recovery Ranch, clients will have the opportunity to take part in the following therapeutic interventions:
Detoxification: When clients come to us with drugs or alcohol still in their systems, it may be most appropriate for them to take part in the detoxification process prior to fully engaging in the therapeutic aspect of programming. Clients will be seen by the doctor within 24 to 48 hours of being admitted into the program. The detox process is monitored 24/7 by our compassionate nursing staff, and our treatment professionals do everything in their power to ensure that clients’ detox process is safe and as comfortable as possible.
Medication management: When clients come to us with a preexisting psychiatric diagnosis, they will be required to meet with our medical director or one of our physician’s assistants once each week. When a co-occurring psychiatric disorder is not present alongside a client’s addiction to stimulants, then he or she will only be required to meet with the medical director or one of our physician’s assistants once during his or her stay. All medication management is handled by the medical director and our qualified nursing staff.
Individual therapy: Individual therapy sessions are an important part of the therapeutic process at Sunrise Recovery Ranch as they are designed to provide clients with time to meet one-on-one with a mental health professional to discuss any concerns they have or to review the progress they are making in treatment. Our certified addiction counselors work closely with our marriage and family therapist interns and trainees to conduct these sessions in a manner that is most beneficial to meeting the clients’ needs. Each client will meet with his or her substance abuse counselor twice per week for progress updates. The marriage and family therapist intern or trainee will also meet with the client at least once per week, with additional sessions being added on an as-needed basis.
Family therapy: Our marriage and family therapist interns and trainees will conduct family therapy sessions once each week if the client’s family members are available and if the client wishes to integrate them into his or her treatment plan. Depending upon the needs of the client, teleconference sessions with the client and his or her family members may also be incorporated into the client’s individual therapy sessions.
Group therapy: Group therapy sessions are a central component to the treatment offered at Sunrise Recovery Ranch, with numerous group sessions being held throughout the day. Marriage and family therapist interns, marriage and family therapist trainees, chemical dependency counselors, and clinical technicians are responsible for leading the various groups that clients participate in. Participation in these group sessions is required and the curriculum of topics that are covered during these sessions may include the following:
- Relapse prevention
- How the disease has impacted clients and their families in a negative manner
- Spirituality
- Defense mechanisms
- Nutrition and wellness
- Anger management
Once clients have completed residential programming at our stimulant abuse treatment center, they have the option of stepping down into our partial hospitalization program (PHP) or our intensive outpatient program (IOP). Case managers work with clients from the time that they are admitted into programming so that aftercare planning can begin and a continuing care plan can be put in place prior to their discharge. We will provide clients with recommendations for continuing care options that will be most beneficial in meeting their specific needs, which may include engaging in outpatient programming. We will also work to ensure that all clients have a solid support system in place prior to leaving our residential treatment center for stimulant addiction.
