The abuse of prescription painkillers has reached epidemic proportions in the United States, resulting in thousands of deaths and hundreds of thousands of visits to hospital emergency rooms every year. Because many of the most commonly abused prescription painkillers contain opioids, individuals who misuse these medications also expose themselves to the risk of becoming addicted. Oxycodone and hydrocodone, which are the active ingredients in the popular painkillers OxyContin and Vicodin, are synthetic opioids with side effects that range from temporary distress to irreversible long-term damage. Though the risks associated with these substances are present regardless how they are used, the likelihood that a person will have a negative experience increases considerably when the drugs are taken without the guidance and supervision of a qualified healthcare provider.
At Sunrise Recovery Ranch in Riverside, California, we understand the impact that opioid use disorder can have on the lives of adult men and women, and we are uniquely prepared to provide the comprehensive painkiller addiction rehabilitation and treatment that will enable individuals in crisis to end their dependence upon prescription painkillers and make the behavioral changes that will support successful long-term recovery.
How to Help a Loved One
Helping a loved one get treatment for painkiller addiction
Realizing that a loved one has become addicted to prescription painkillers can be a confusing and frustrating experience. But it should not prompt you to feel either hopeless or helpless. With a few simple yet vital steps, you can help your loved one get his or her life back on track:
- First, understand that your loved one is dealing with a serious disorder. Opioid use disorder is not evidence of a character flaw or lack of willpower. It is a progressive disease that, if left untreated, can be fatal.
- Educate yourself about the disease of addiction and the impact that prescription painkiller abuse can have on the body and mind. The more you understand what your loved one is experiencing, the better prepared you will be to offer valuable support and meaningful solutions and treatment center options for painkiller addiction.
- Learn about the types of painkiller abuse rehab and treatment have helped others who were struggling with opioid use disorder, and identify programs that offer the type and level of care that meets your loved one’s unique needs.
- Research how to talk to a loved one about his or her addiction, as this can be a painful and difficult conversation. Do your homework. Learn how to keep the conversation productive, how to respond to anger or denial, and how to avoid driving your loved one away.
- Do not try to do everything yourself. Enlist trusted friends or family members in the effort to get your loved one into an addiction treatment center for painkillers.
- Volunteer to take over whatever logistical concerns may be preventing your loved one from focusing on his or her health. Make appointments, provide transportation, arrange for childcare, cook meals, and do whatever it takes to get your loved one into treatment.
Finally, remember that professional help at a painkiller addiction treatment center is just the first step on the path of long-term recovery. Your loved one will need your continued support for years to come. Leave no doubt in his or her mind that you will be there every step of the way.
Why Consider Treatment
Why consider treatment for painkiller addiction at Sunrise Recovery Ranch in Riverside, CA
Chronic abuse of prescription painkillers can have a devastating impact on a person’s physical, psychological, and social wellbeing. As is the case with other opioids such as heroin or morphine, prescription painkillers can put users at risk for both immediate and long-term damage. Depending upon the type of painkiller that a person is abusing, the amount that he or she has been using, and the length of time that this behavior has continued, physical and psychological effects may include confusion, disorientation, depression, insomnia, hypotension, respiratory distress, and even death. A person who develops opioid use disorder will become compelled to prioritize the acquisition and use of these medications over his or her academic, occupational, or social responsibilities. This behavior can cause family discord, damaged or destroyed friendships, job loss and unemployment, financial problems, and legal problems. Without effective professional intervention and rehabilitation, the downward spiral of prescription painkiller abuse and opioid use disorder will continue to wreak ever-increasing damage on an individual’s health and wellness.
